What do the map pin colours mean?

The colour of the map pins represent the latest information we have on whether the church will be open to visitors on the Ride+Stride event day. A green pin means that we have been told that the church will be open, a red pin means that we have been told that a church will be closed and a yellow pin indicates that we have not been told anything.

What do the Ride+Stride church levels mean?

The ride+stride level is an indication of the level of contribution that a church is providing through the ride+stride event. There are 4 things a church can do: open on the day, provide a welcome party to welcome visitors, provide refreshments for visitors and fundraise. The level is made from two parts, a rating and a tier, defined as in the table below.

Fundraising Not Fundraising Welcome Party No Welcome Party
Open Church Platinum Silver
Closed Church Gold Bronze
Refreshments Tier 1 Tier 3
No Refreshments Tier 2 Tier 4

How can I update my church on the Event Map?

Please contact the Count Organiser with the items you want to change and be sure to indicate which church you are referring to!

Can we do it another day?

If you want to support this event but you have a church event that clashes with this date, we will not reject your submission but please note the following from the sponsorship form “[it] is not part of the official event promoted by the Trust and is undertaken entirely at the participant’s own risk.”

Who are we?

We are the Church Trust supporting the 500+ churches in the county of Gloucestershire with North Bristol and we are a registered charity, number 1120266.

The County Organiser for the event in this region is Glenn. Please contact him if you need any help.

Who does what in the event?

These are the roles involved in the running of the ride+stride event.

Participants
These are the volunteers who kindly take part in the event at the local level, for example by cycling or walking to as few or as many churches as they are able! Without participants, there will be no sponsors and without sponsors there will be no money raised locally and GHCT will be able to help fewer churches. Participants are in short supply. If you can cycle or walk even between your church and the nearest church and back then you would give the local organiser some hope! Please volunteer if you can. Contact your local organiser or the county organiser if you do not know who your local organiser is. If you are a participant, we thank you.
Sponsors
What can we say about the sponsors except thank you? If you want to sponsor someone to Ride+Stride, please contact your local organiser or the county organiser if you do not know who your local organiser is. If there are no participants near you then could you become one? If not, would you consider making a donation?
Donors
The Trust accepts donations at any time and they will form part of the accounts for the event in the year in which the donation is made. Please see the help panel at the foot of this page.
Welcome Party
A member of the welcome party is usually a member of the church. It is common for the 8 hour day to be split into one hour slots to spread the load (it can be chilly sitting in church!) but some brave souls take on more than one consecutive hour. It can be a great pleasure to be met by a member of the welcome party after a tiring ride.
Local Organiser (LO)
An LO usually looks after a single church but in some cases, may run the event in more than one church. An LO has to advertise the event locally and try to get participants and donors to take part. The LO looks after the participants, showing them the correct use of the sponsor form and highlighting the need to maximise gift aid contributions. The LO also tries to organise a rota of welcome party volunteers to welcome visitors on the day and may provide light refreshments and snacks for those visitors. After the event, the LO rounds up the paperwork and money from the participants and sends it all to the CO (or pays the Trust directly by BACS).
Regional Organiser (RO)
We do not use ROs in this county but if we did, they would help the CO manage the large number of churches by ensuring that their area was running smoothly and reporting consistently.
County Organiser (CO)
The CO administers the system and does all of the results processing at the county level, reporting to the National Churches Trust.

Can we do something else?

It is a fact of life that some church communities may be short of participants able to cycle or walk and so sometimes it is hard for a church to take part even when they want to. We are therefore encouraging any church that wishes to support GHCT but cannot find participants to cycle or walk or ride a horse to consider other activities that they can do.

If your church wants to support GHCT but you are not sure how, please have a look at our list of alternative sponsored events for inspiration and help us make the list longer!

What do you need from me?

It is funny that you should ask …

  1. Could you be a Local Organiser? If so, contact the churches near you and see if any of them have a vacancy for the GHCT Local Organiser role. Many have, we need about 300 more!
  2. Could you cycle/walk/horse-ride/drive for your local church? If so, contact them and ask to be put in touch with the Local Organiser for the GHCT Ride+Stride and offer yourself as a participant!
  3. Could you help run another event? If your local church doesn’t have an event in place this year, perhaps you could help them run some other event?
  4. Could you welcome people to your church? On the day of the event, visitors from neighbouring areas may visit your church. It is always nice if there is someone there to receive them and show them around. Many also provide light refreshments and snacks for their visitors. Offer yourself to the Local Organiser as one of the Welcome Party!

In all the cases above, if you get no success, contact Glenn, your County Organiser and he will try to put you in touch with someone local to you that can help. Don’t be put off!

Do you have more than one website?

The main website for GHCT is the one you are looking at i.e. www.ghct.org.uk.

The National Churches Trust website has a page about Ride+Stride. It also manages a website dedicated to the event and we have a page on there at http://www.rideandstrideuk.org/counties/gloucestershire/.

Do you have any safety advice?

We can point you at the National Churches Trust website for a little common sense information but please take care and only do what you yourself are comfortable with and judge is safe.

We can point you towards our Participant’s Guidance page or at the National Churches Trust website but if you are still unsure, please contact your County Organiser.
