A Visit to All Hallows, South Cerney
Photography Competition Entry: A Visit to All Hallows, South Cerney
We’re delighted to welcome back returning photography competition entrant Sophie Kohl, who has shared a wonderful account of her recent visit to All Hallows Church in South Cerney. Gloucestershire is one of Sophie’s favourite counties for church exploring, and her latest visit captures the rich history and charm of this remarkable building.
All Hallows dates from the 12th century, a heritage immediately evident in the magnificent south doorway decorated with carved beasts and interlace. Above the arch sits a niche containing a worn yet powerful carving of Christ in Glory and the Harrowing of Hell – a rare survivor from the medieval period.
One of the church’s most extraordinary stories came to light in 1913, when an 8th‑century carved foot and head were discovered hidden deep within a cavity in the bell tower. These fragments, part of a 12th‑century crucifix that once belonged to a rood screen, had almost certainly been concealed during the Reformation to protect them. Their survival is extraordinary: the All Hallows crucifix is one of only two known rood representations to survive between the Norman Conquest and the Reformation. The original is now cared for by the British Museum, and the current church warden believes more hidden artefacts may still lie within the ancient walls.
The churchyard holds medieval tombs, adding to the sense of deep history. The current tower dates to around 1150 and once supported a 13th‑century spire, which was struck by lightning in 1857. Inside, the 14th‑century chancel retains a worn wall painting on its east wall, offering another glimpse into the church’s long medieval life.
Sophie describes All Hallows as “absolutely beautiful” and was especially touched to find a small offering of chocolates left for visitors near the south door. Having now visited more than 300 churches, she is passionate about their conservation and hopes to work within a church trust one day.
We are pleased to share Sophie’s photograph in this year’s competition.
