Adam’s Pilgrimage for Stoke Orchard Church

Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust are delighted to support one of our Trustees, Adam Klups, in his fundraising pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela to fundraise for St James the Great Church in Stoke Orchard.

Adam, who is the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) Secretary and Church Buildings Officer for the Diocese of Gloucester is walking together with Liz Kitch, Oxford DAC Secretary. The sponsorship will go towards a conservation project later this year to preserve the stunning medieval wall paintings telling the story of St James of Compostella in St James the Great.  The paintings consist of 28 panels with unusual decorative floral borders. The paintings are unique in England, and it is possible that  that Stoke Orchard was on an ancient pilgrim’s route to Compostella in Spain.

Following professional surveys, various discussions and a competitive tender process the church has appointed conservators Perry Lithgow to do the work. Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust has already provided a grant to help with the cost of the preliminary surveys.
