Churches of Gloucestershire book publication talk
On Thursday 19th September Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust (GHCT) will be hosting a talk at St Gregory’s Roman Catholic Church, St James’s Square, Cheltenham GL50 3PR. The speaker will be Nicola Coldstream, a well-known historian of medieval architecture, who will be talking about her recently published book “Churches of Gloucestershire”.
The county of Gloucestershire has a rich and varied past which is reflected in its many historic churches. The landscape is dominated by two principal features – the River Severn and the Cotswold hills – and Gloucestershire’s churches illustrate the changing face of the county, from the Forest of Dean to the Cotswold escarpment, the Severn Vale to the watery southern boundary by the River Thames. “Churches of Gloucestershire” explores some of the most interesting churches across the county. The buildings range from rural and urban churches, dating from the Anglo-Saxons to the modern age, some displaying Gloucestershire’s wealth from the medieval wool trade, others its industrial past.
Nicola Coldstream is a historian of medieval architecture who spent many years teaching and writing about medieval buildings. A graduate of Cambridge University and the Courtauld Institute, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, former President of the British Archaeological Association and a Trustee of the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust. Her books include 'The Decorated Style. Architecture and Ornament 1240-1360' and 'Medieval Architecture', Oxford History of Art.
Doors will open at 6.30 pm for welcome and refreshments and the talk will start at 7.00 pm.
You can book from 10th August, for £8 per person, which will include a glass of wine and light refreshments. Tickets will also be available on the door, for £10 per person.
This will be a fascinating talk, with the additional chance to look around one of Cheltenham’s most impressive church interiors.
St Gregory's Church is in the centre of Cheltenham. There is plenty of parking within a short walking distance. If you park in the NCP Brewery car park (GL50 4EJ), you can reach the church by walking down Henrietta St, crossing the High St and continuing along St George's Place (pedestrian only from the High St) until you get to Clarence St, where you turn right and find St Gregory’s on your left after 150 yards.
Tickets for this event will go on sale on 10th August at 9am.
