Celebrating the Success of Our First Travelling Kids Club
This week marked an exciting milestone for our community outreach programme as we launched the very first session of the Travelling Kids Club – and what a wonderful start it was. Hosted at St John’s Church, Charfield, the session welcomed five enthusiastic children who spent the afternoon exploring, creating, and learning in the historic surroundings of our cherished church.
A Day Full of Imagination and Activity
The children took part in a variety of hands-on activities designed to spark creativity and curiosity. These included:
• Mask making
• Telescope crafting
• A reading corner
• An obstacle course
• ‘Build a Church’ construction play
• Pick a cape and choose a theme tune
From colourful masks to imaginative telescopes, the children embraced every moment. Their energy and enthusiasm created a positive buzz in the church, making it a joy for all who attended.
Church Heroes vs Church Villains
A highlight of the day was an educational scavenger hunt, where the children searched for mischievous ‘church villains’ hidden around the building. Characters such as Leaky Loki and Trash Goblin helped explain how different problems can affect the fabric of a church.
Through playful storytelling, the children learned about issues such as water damage and litter and how we can all help protect these treasured buildings. Leaky Loki, for example, underscores the importance of reporting leaks as soon as they arise.
This blend of fun and learning proved a hit—when asked about their favourite activity, the children excitedly chose the obstacle course and the scavenger hunt.
A Community Effort
Adding to the event's warmth were members of the congregation, who came to support the session. Their involvement helped foster a genuine multigenerational atmosphere, demonstrating how special these church spaces can be for community connection.
Looking Ahead
With such positive feedback and happy faces all round, we are delighted to say that the Travelling Kids Club will return soon. Over the coming months, we plan to run a further two or three themed sessions at St John’s Church before taking the club on the road to visit other churches involved with the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust.
We look forward to welcoming even more children and families as the programme grows, helping young people discover the joy of creativity, community, and our historic church buildings.
If you would like to get involved or learn more about upcoming sessions, please do get in touch—we’d love to hear from you.
