Talk: The English Arts and Crafts Movement at its Best?

We are delighted to invite you to an evening talk at Chorley's Auctioneers exploring one of the most important chapters in English design history, held in aid of the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust.

About the Talk

Ernest Gimson and the Barnsley brothers, Sidney and Ernest, left London in the early 1890s to pursue a simpler life in the Gloucestershire countryside. Settling in the village of Sapperton, they established craft workshops producing furniture and metalwork that would come to define the Cotswold School of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Around them gathered a circle of like-minded designers, makers and thinkers who shared their vision of honest craft and beautiful, purposeful design.

This talk by writer and folklorist Kirsty Hartsiotis explores their creative process across furniture, architecture, textiles, metalwork and plasterwork. It examines the ideals that drove their work, what drew them to the Cotswolds, and the lasting legacy they left in the region and beyond. Their influence stretches well into the twentieth century and continues to resonate today.
