The incredible transformation of Quarry Chapel

We are thrilled to share the incredible transformation of Quarry Chapel, a historic gem built by quarry workers in their spare time in 1852.

Over the last few years, Quarry Chapel has been revitalised into a thriving community hub, thanks in part to the £15,000 grant we were able to provide.

In 2019, this cherished chapel was on the brink of closure, but through the dedication of Abi, the Development Worker, and the collective efforts that raised £90,000 through various grants, the chapel began its renovation journey in November 2022.

View the success!

Abi, the visionary and driving force behind Quarry Chapel, has been instrumental in turning this space into a safe, inclusive, and vibrant community-led centre. Her passion for the well-being of local residents shines through in every project she undertakes.

A beautiful example of this is the raised beds Abi initiated outside the chapel, which add a vibrant pop of colour to the space and are also integral to the sustainability-focused workshops she runs.

These plants will be used in dyeing workshops, connecting participants to the natural world, and teaching them the value of sustainable practices. Participants also learn the full cycle—from planting and nurturing to using plants in creative projects.

This hands-on educational trail empowers them with skills that go beyond the garden, building a deeper understanding of sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Abi’s work has had a profound impact on local youths, particularly those experiencing anxiety, through art-based workshops and life-skill initiatives. Her close collaboration with local schools, one of which stated that 28% of students were struggling with attendance, has brought about significant positive change.

One of many remarkable success stories is that of a young girl who, after years of being bullied within school, stopped attending, through the support of the Chapel projects and Abi she was able to regain her confidence and re-joined her peers, successfully passing all her exams this year.

The transformation of Quarry Chapel is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about creating a sanctuary where people can find purpose, friendship, and a sense of belonging.

Since the renovations, the chapel has become a hub for wellbeing groups and workshops, now fully accessible to all, including wheelchair users.

This accessibility has opened the doors to even more community members, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the inclusive and supportive environment Abi has cultivated.

Looking ahead, Abi’s vision continues to inspire.

Her next project is to tarmac the car park, further enhancing accessibility, and to develop a child-friendly community area at the back of the chapel. The chapel also dreams of creating an outdoor reading space and a ‘reading café’ to bring people together in new and meaningful ways.

Quarry Chapel has become an essential part of the Cam & Dursley community, thanks to the relentless dedication and the collective efforts of everyone involved.

We at GHCT are incredibly proud to have played a part in this amazing journey. We look forward to continuing our support for Quarry Chapel as it grows and evolves. Quarry Chapel is currently looking for volunteers to help maintain this beautiful space and for support in raising funds to complete the car park before winter.

Together, we would love to ensure that this community treasure remains a beacon of hope and connection for generations to come.

We also want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to our incredible supporters—it’s only through your generosity that we can continue to fund and champion fantastic projects like Quarry Chapel.

Every contribution, no matter the size, directly enables us to reinvest in spaces that become vital community hubs.

Your support not only breathes new life into historic sites but also empowers individuals like Abi to create lasting, positive change within their communities. Together, we are making a tangible difference, ensuring that these spaces continue to serve and uplift those who need them most.
